Little Island
Years ago I stood in a Greenwich Village living room while my friends Carla and Jon tied the knot. The officiant (A rabbi? A yogi? I can’t remember) was wrapping things up with the Sage Advice portion of the program just before we broke for cocktails. He offered the usual and customary guidance on good communication, mutual respect, intellectual curiosity and then he threw a curve ball:
Enjoy Nature Everyday
I stopped eyeing the buffet and started listening. We were in the middle of New York City back in the days before budgets boosts and private funding cared much about the Hudson River water front and and that old abandoned elevated railroad track. But still…
When I left that evening his words stuck with me and since then they’ve become a guiding principle, a mantra, a way of being through all of the things that this town has delivered since that day. All of the things.
Living an outdoor life in a big city is something I’m good at and dedicated to.
I’m in it for the scenery, the history, the tides, the weather, the buildings and the snacks. I’m into the economics of outdoors and the meditative nature of unplugging. And I’m thrilled by natural beauty in surprising places.
I’ll be writing weekly.
